International Women’s Day 2018: This year it’s more important than ever to #PressforProgress

International Women’s Day is a time to champion women's rights and the progression of females all over the world, while also celebrating past achievements.

The theme this year is #PressforProgress. The World Economic Forum's 2017 Global Gender Gap Report revealed that gender parity is over 200 years away, so it’s more important than ever to keep motivated for change.

Here at Melt Content we’re surrounded by amazing women – not just in our team but also among the clients we work with. So, to mark International Women's Day 2018 we got an insight from the women of Melt and some of our clients to discuss what the day means to them and how we can #PressforProgress.


Why is International Women’s Day important to you?

It is a chance for us all to reflect on the inspirational achievements of women worldwide. If you believe in something and work hard enough then what seems to be impossible can be made possible.

It’s an opportunity to celebrate women, their achievements and the progress we have made on the journey to equality. It is also an important day to highlight that we are still a long way off achieving gender parity, and that significant, collective action is needed before we can achieve it.

What is your proudest achievement?

I am proud to have built a successful career in travel marketing – an industry I am passionate about – working alongside people I am inspired by, and I feel incredibly lucky for the beautiful places I have the opportunity to visit.

Setting goals higher than I felt were achievable and then achieving them. So realistically I think it’s having the right attitude to dream big and go for it.

What changes would you still like to see for women?

Equal pay, respect and responsibility. I have not yet worked in or with a company where the leading positions were equally split between men and women.

Equality. I feel very lucky to live in a society where women have so many opportunities, but there is still a long way to go in the UK and worldwide.

What advice would you give to women starting out in their chosen field of work?

Trust in yourself and don’t be too humble. There is a pattern that I have noticed in job interviews I have had with applicants: women are often very humble about their achievements, skills and talents and not as vocal as some of their male counterparts. This definitely does not apply to everyone but do trust in what you can do. Expose yourself to challenges and don’t get too comfortable; I have always learned the most in challenging situations.

Always keep an open mind and keep learning. Do not be afraid to ask questions and always treat your colleagues as you would like them to treat you.

Which woman inspires you the most?

There are many women that inspire me – most of them are teachers and friends that crossed my path. Very stereotypical, but my mum is a strong inspiration and influence on me. She is a warrior, who went through hard times but never gave up. She is a very giving and loving person who currently teaches German to refugee children.

My Mum. She not only is my rock, my biggest supporter and my cheerleader, but she is a warrior herself. In the 80s she became a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which was, and still is, such a heavily male-dominated institution. She was faced with gender stereotypes at every level of her career, but she never let that knock her. She was in one of the first all-female troops to come out of training – inspiring for women everywhere. She has always shown me that my gender doesn’t define my future, and that I can be whoever and whatever I want to be, and to always carry my confidence like a badge of honour.

Saying to myself ‘I can do it’. I once heard someone famous talk about who he looks up to and it inspired me. He said his hero is his future self. He has a clear view of what he looks like and his capabilities, and each day he feels he gets nearer but is in a never-ending chase to be a better version of himself!
